Swans Series

Growing up as a 'Swan', it was natural that swans became a special symbol for me. I inherited some early pottery swans from my paternal grandmother and that was the start of an evergrowing pottery collections of swans, from the early American potteries as well as some European additions.

In 1990, spending the summer in Rhode Island, the local swans started their 6 weeks of molting. I was riding my bicycle daily down to the little pond where they all had gathered together for protection. Taking English muffins and other treats, I was able to sit among them, study & draw them.  A few would hiss at me, but for the most part they just ambled about contendedly. The swans have about 25,000 feathers, so instead of trying to portray exactness, I try to portray their unique regal beauty and form.
